OnePlus X hands on: Form meets function

The OnePlus X is a terribly interesting device. It doesn’t have the same expectations of a bigger flagship, or the pressure to be the best. Instead, it cobbles together some great components into a package that’s just $250, and the potential to be a surprise hit like last year’s OnePlus One.
In my short time with the OnePlus X, I was quite impressed with the design and build quality. It’s encased in glass and metal, which means it doesn’t feel like something that’s just $250; it really feels premium, and although it’s a fingerprint magnet, it looks gorgeous.
Underneath the hood is a Snapdragon 801 and 3GB of RAM, which OnePlus said it chose for the sake of cost and stability. The device didn’t feel like it was running an older model chipset, but time will tell if it can stand up under heavy use. The 5-inch Full HD display is a very welcome AMOLED panel, which is not something you see often on a device at this price point. Simply put, it looks great. Colors pop, blacks are rich, and the balance was not too warm, which is to my liking.
You also get 16GB of expandable storage (up to 128GB), which is great news for people who love taking their media with them.
The smaller form factor and price tag also mean a few compromises. The battery is only 2525 mAh, the fingerprint reader is gone, it’s still missing NFC, and OnePlus has reverted to micro USB for the charging port, citing issues fitting the USB-C port into the slim form factor of the device. The 13-megapixel f2.2 camera doesn’t have OIS, either.
But did I mention it costs $250? You’ll have to wait to pick one up, though, because the OnePlus X will still only be available for purchase with an invite. Luckily, OnePlus has learned from previous excursions, and have limited the invite system to the first month of the handset’s availability. You’ll be able to pick one up beginning Nov. 5 in the EU and India, and the U.S. on Nov. 19; the ceramic version, meanwhile, is only going to be available in the EU and India on Nov. 24.
It seems to me like OnePlus has managed to pack quite a lot into a small, elegant package, and I’m excited to see if it’ll take up the mantle of the inexpensive device I can very easily recommend to friends or family looking for a new device.

The Moto X Force is the Droid Turbo 2 for everywhere else

Motorola sells phones all over the world, but for many years now it's had an extra special relationship with US carrier Verizon. In fact, Motorola's "Droid" range is made exclusivelyfor the network provider, though these devices occasionally pop up in other parts of the world under different names. That's the case with today's announcement of the Moto X Force, which is essentially just an international version of the new Droid Turbo 2Motorola launched in the US a couple of days ago. Aside from the lack of Verizon and Droid logos, it's exactly the same device, which boasts a shatterproof screen as its killer feature.

In fact, Motorola's so confident in its "ShatterShield" technology that the Moto X Force comes will a four-year guarantee covering serious screen damage. The handset even has two touchscreen elements in case one fails after a particularly nasty tumble, and though it's not completely immune to scratches, the top layer of the display sandwich is apparently so easy to replace that owners can do it themselves. Beyond the promise of an accident-proof display, the Force has the best specifications of all the Moto X range, including a 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64 gigs of expandable storage, a 5.4-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) AMOLED panel, a huge 3,760mAh battery as well as support for both PMA and Qi wireless charging standards, and a 21-megapixel main camera flanked by a 5MP front-facer.

The Moto X Force can also be customized through Moto Maker, with a couple of unique ballistic nylon and leather options not found on other handsets in the X line-up. Motorola will eventually launch the Force worldwide -- apart from in the US where the Droid Turbo 2 will remain a Verizon exclusive -- starting with a few key markets before completing the rollout early next year. The UK is one of the countries high on Motorola's agenda, where the Force will launch in mid-November for £499 for the 32GB model and £534 for the 64GB configuration, though various carrier deals will also be available.

MICROMAX’S TAKES A JIBE AT ONEPLUS 2 WITH ITS UPCOMING YUTOPIA

Micromax is certainly speaking out loud about its upcoming Yu Yutopia. CEO Rahul Sharma said that it would be the “most powerful phone on the planet”, however, the Indian smartphone makers have gone even further with its new teaser on Facebook that read- “Calling a 1080p Display a 2016 Flagship killer? #WhySettle #YUTOPIA.”
The new teaser is an obvious dig at the “2016 flagship killer” OnePlus 2, however, apart from that they’ve also confirmed that the Yutopia will come with a Quad HD display. The Facebook teaser also includes a blurred image of the OnePlus 2 with the words “Never Settle For 1080p” on it.
Yu Yutopia TeaserTherefore, with this teaser and the previous one, we now know that Yu’s next premium smartphone will sport a metal build, as compared to its usual plastic build and a Quad HD display for the first time.
However, speculations about the upcoming Yutopia’s specifications include a 5.2 display, 64 bit class Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 backed by a 4GB RAM, Cyanogen 32GB memory with expandability and a rumoured 21MP primary camera with an 8MP front camera.
The company has not confirmed any of the rumoured specs so until then, let’s just hope all the mud-slinging pays off.

Galaxy View hands-on: An 18.4-inch media-consumption machine

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy View earlier this morning and we had a chance to meet up with the company to check out its latest tablet. But wait, we’ve already gotten ahead of ourselves, because it isn’t really a tablet, at least not in the traditional sense.
Sure, it runs Android and looks kind of like a tablet, but it’s more of a portable display with built-in streaming options. Kind of like a TV you can carry around your house, complete with a built-in handle that doubles as a two-position stand. It’s not too heavy or clunky for that kind of use, moving from room-to-room, propping on a coffee table or a nightstand, but it does seem kind of cumbersome for something you’d attempt to bring on a trip outside of the house. Samsung assures us it fits in carry-on bags easily, though, so we’ll try that out.
The 1080p screen might not seem impressive, not for a company known for building some of the sharpest and most colorful displays on the market, but it does the trick. Viewing angles are good enough for two people to sit comfortably side-by-side to binge-watch some Downton Abbey.
Speaking of streaming — Samsung has a custom primary homepage with shortcuts to apps like Twitch, Netflix, YouTube, Crackle, CNN, Hulu, History, Showtime and even streaming TV options from DISH, Time Warner Cable, Comcast and more. you can’t customize this screen, and some of the content you’ll need to pay for to access, but it shows the focus is on streaming media, not really anything else.
In other words, this isn’t Samsung’s take on an iPad Pro, which Apple is clearly marketing as a productivity tool with the Apple Pen and keyboard accessories. Samsung isn’t talking about productivity, it’s promoting this as a catch-all for the folks who want a screen in the kitchen… sometimes, maybe while they cook… and another screen in the bathroom… but also only sometimes, maybe while they brush their teeth in the morning.
It’s a compelling case, and the product seems well built. Do we need this sort of thing? Well, that’s another story entirely, and we’ll be testing it over the coming days to find out.

DROID Turbo 2 unveiled by Verizon

Verizon just unveiled the DROID Turbo 2 during a press event in Manhattan on Tuesday. The phone features a shatterproof screen that’s developed using Motorola’s shatter shield technology.
Motorola demonstrated just how strong the screen is on stage during its press event, and even dropped it to the floor facing screen-down. It came from the test unscathed. Inside, a flexible AMOLED screen is surrounded by an aluminum core that keeps it safe. Additionally, there’s an extra fail-safe layer on top of the touchscreen to keep it safe. That’s in addition to another interior lens and an exterior lens that prevents external scratches and damage.
The DROID Turbo 2 can be customized using Moto Maker, with more than 1,000 different combinations available on the site. It also features up to 48 hours of battery life and TurboPower, for adding up to 13 hours of charge in just 15 minutes.
There’s also a Snapdragon 810 processor, a 21MP camera, a 5.4-inch Quad HD display, a 5-megapixel front-facing wide-angle camera.
The Turbo 2 will be available for $26 (32GB) per month or $30 per month (64GB) starting this Thursday.

DROID Maxx 2 unveiled by Verizon

Verizon announced the DROID Maxx 2 during a press event in New York City. The DROID Maxx features 48 hours of battery life, and can be charged rapidly using Motorola’s TurboCharge technology.
The Maxx 2 features a 5.5-inch 1080p display, support for microSD cards for adding up to 128GB of additional storage. It’s basically Verizon’s version of the Moto X Play, which until now hasn’t been available to U.S. consumers.
The DROID Maxx 2 will be available online and in stores beginning this Thursday, starting at $20 per month with Verizon’s early upgrade plans.
